Freak (The F-Word, #2) by E. Davies Review

   Freak (F-Word) (Volume 2) by E. Davies 3.5 Stars!

We dated for a hot second five years ago. Things have changed.”

Five years ago, Zeph met River. The timing couldn’t have been worse. An orphan with something to prove and the ghosts of his past breathing down his neck, Zeph took the offer from a pro MMA gym to live and train in the Midwest. River let him go easily. If it was a convenient excuse to escape emotional intimacy, neither of them had to admit it. Until now.

Drag queen and makeup artist River isn’t easily fazed, but meeting Zeph on his home turf throws him for a loop. Something about Zeph still gets under his skin. And River’s next job, a drag show in L.A. and Vegas, will require a security guy to look after the performers. Who better than a tattooed mixed martial artist who still gives him smoldering looks?

It doesn’t take long for them to fall together. They’re opposite as can be, but dating for ten days wasn’t long enough the first time around. Another ten days could get it out of their systems… but are they fighting for or with each other? It’s easy to get hard. It’s hard to be easy. Vulnerability is off the table, until the table turns. How long do you have to have known a guy to put your life into his hands?

Review

I am not usually a big fan of second chance romances but this one between Zeph and River really works.

They dated years ago intensely but briefly. Zeph left to fight MMA.

River and Zeph are opposites and yet treat each other with care and value. Zeph’s is a pretty troubled soul but he is kind.

This is a very sexy romance with emotionial impact. Great heroes!

Flaunt (The F-Word, #1) by E. Davies Review

  Flaunt (F-Word Book 1) by E. Davies 3 Stars!

Moving to the suburbs of L.A. was supposed to give Nic Montero a fresh start. After escaping his family, coming out as a gay trans man, and excelling in computer programming out of desperation to get financially stable or die, everything should be easy. But joining gay culture now, post-transition, feels impossible… until he runs into the force of nature that is Kyle. Everything Nic isn’t, Kyle embodies. Green hair, garters and cut-off shorts, sports jerseys, and all, brash Kyle is the most gorgeous man he’s ever laid eyes on, and he pulls Nic headlong into the center of his world. If only Nic felt like enough for a man like Kyle.

“One-night stands are my only option.”

Loud, loving, and too much for most men to handle, Kyle Everett catches eyes and occasionally scorn… even at his job at the local HIV charity, Plus. His days and nights are spent at work, his precious spare moments spent with his son, Kevin, when it’s his turn to co-parent, or his best friend, drag queen River. He only has money or time for cheap flings, but the lanky otter who walks into his life makes Kyle want to hold him for longer than a night. He knows what it’s like for Nic to be without a family, but he isn’t brave enough to let this man into his life… until his charity is targeted by bigots, and Nic’s there for him.

“I’ll stay with you if you’re brave enough to be you.”

Nic spent his twenties avoiding family and even his own femininity, but his yearning is impossible to ignore. Kyle’s used to flying solo, but Nic offers him safety and fills gaps in his life he never realized existed and now can’t stand. Living in close proximity, they can’t run from their attraction, but they’re each used to being rejected, with the emotional scars to prove it. Can two men who feel like they’re not enough and too much find something just right?

Review

There is a lot to like about this book (the romance and the characters) and then a bit that leaves me unfulfilled (the side plot and some of Kyle’s choices)

I love the opposites attract romance in Kyle and Nic as well as the exploration of the complexities of gender. The little reveals along the way and the flirting and heat between the heroes is great.

Kyle reasons for not wanting a relationship are not very believable and he waits too long to tell Nic about his son and co parenting. The hate crime plot needs to be unraveled a bit more.

However, the core of the book, the love story, is very good.

Tender with a Twist (Rainbow Cove Book 2) by Annabeth Albert 4 Stars!

One kinky wood carver. One younger chef looking to try new things. A series of lessons that bring both men more than they bargained for…

Curtis Hunt has made a name for himself as a chainsaw wood carver, winning national competitions and operating a small business in Rainbow Cove, Oregon. As winter whittles away his tourist traffic, his goal is just to survive the season and try to not get lost in grief for his dead lover. It’s been two years, but he’s sure he’ll never be over the love of a lifetime. However, his body has a certain restlessness that he doesn’t quite know how to calm.

Logan Rosner knows a thing or two about restlessness. It’s what drove him to Rainbow Cove to be a chef at a bar and grill run by his friends. And it’s what drives him to a single sizzling encounter with the local legendary lumberjack. Both men get far more than they expected and learn that first impressions aren’t always accurate…

But when Logan proposes a series of sexy lessons, Curtis must decide how much he’s willing to risk. He knows he can’t afford to get attached to Logan’s good cooking, his easy smiles, or his caretaking, but he keeps going back for more, even as deeper emotions become involved. Soon, Curtis must decide whether to risk his heart again or risk losing Logan for good.

Review

I enjoyed this next entry into the Rainbow Cove series. I love the idea for the series of a town moving itself to be queer friendly. I hope for many books and many new couples.

Curtis and Logan are an unlikely couple on the surface. Age difference and Curtis is just withdrawn and grumpy.

But we found out they have a great deal in common and it is lovely to watch Logan’s confidence grow and Curtis put aside his grief to fall in love.

There are annoying aspects to this book like how Logan isn’t really that close to his co owners and they try to protect him.

However, the details of Curtis’ art and Logan learning to be the Dom he wants to be are well done.

A very good read! Can’t wait for the next one!

Small Change by Roan Parrish 99 cents! One of my favorite reads of the year!

   Small Change by Roan Parrish

Ginger Holtzman has fought for everything she’s ever had—the success of her tattoo shop, respect in the industry, her upcoming art show. Tough and independent, she has taking-no-crap down to an art form. Good thing too, since keeping her shop afloat, taking care of her friends, and scrambling to finish her paintings doesn’t leave time for anything else. Which … is for the best, because then she doesn’t notice how lonely she is. She’ll get through it all on her own, just like she always does.

Christopher Lucen opened a coffee and sandwich joint in South Philly because he wanted to be part of a community after years of running from place to place, searching for something he could never quite name. Now, he relishes the familiarity of knowing what his customers want, and giving it to them. But what he really wants now is love.

When they meet, Christopher is smitten, but Ginger … isn’t quite so sure. Christopher’s gorgeous, and kind, and their opposites-attract chemistry is off the charts. But hot sex is one thing—truly falling for someone? Terrifying. When her world starts to crumble around her, Ginger has to face the fact that this fight can only be won by being vulnerable—this fight, she can’t win on her own.

Off Campus By Amy Jo Cousins Free! Great Book!

Off Campus (Bend or Break Book 1) By Amy Jo Cousins

Everyone’s got secrets. Some are just harder to hide.

With his father’s ponzi scheme assets frozen, Tom Worthington believes finishing college is impossible unless he can pay his own way. After months sleeping in his car and gypsy-cabbing for cash, he’s ready to do just that.

But his new, older-student housing comes with an unapologetically gay roommate. Tom doesn’t ask why Reese Anders has been separated from the rest of the student population. He’s just happy to be sleeping in a bed.

Reese isn’t about to share his brutal story with his gruff new roommate. You’ve seen one homophobic jock, you’ve seen ’em all. He plans to drag every twink on campus into his bed until Tom moves out. But soon it becomes clear Tom isn’t budging.

Tom isn’t going to let some late-night sex noise scare him off, especially when it’s turning him on. But he doesn’t want any drama either. He’ll keep his hands, if not his eyes, to himself. Boundaries have a way of blurring when you start sharing truths, though. And if Tom and Reese cross too many lines, they may need to find out just how far they can bend…before they break.

After Midnight by Santino Hassell 99 cents! or Kindle Unlimited

    After Midnight by Santino Hassell

Two decades after war ravaged the nation, one of the last remaining metropolises thrives on a currency of sex, drugs, and lies.

Gordon Frost is a survivor. He outlived all of his friends after bombs decimated the hardscrabble neighborhood he grew up in, and he made it through the orphanages and crime-ridden slums that followed. With few prospects for the future, Gordon carved out a niche for himself in the expanding drug trade of Lexington, PA. It’s not pretty, but it’s his, and it beats the skin trade he was involved with before. But a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time results in a brush with death, going by the name of Adam. Afterward, the life that once seemed good enough isn’t quite the same.

Adam Blake is an assassin on the brink of being terminated by the very organization that controls him. He completed his mission, but not without being seen. With his secrets in danger of being exposed by Gordon, Adam knows he should kill the smart-mouthed redhead, but finds himself intrigued by the troublesome civilian instead.

When Gordon’s knack for finding trouble combines with the dangerous consequences of Adam’s indecision, their worlds intertwine in an explosive way.

Trigger warnings: Graphic sex, violence, and drug use.

A Valentine’s Short Story!

Review

If you are a fan of this series (and if you aren’t what is wrong with you!), this is a must read.

It is a near perfect peek in on Colin and Rafe and David and Rex on Valentines Day. We also get a little visit with Ginger and Christopher. The best.

The joy and humor in the book is about just how socially and romantically awkward the brothers, David and Colin are. It is everything.

It is also moving as Colin pushes through his panic to love Rafe. Sweet.

I wish the short story had let us see a little more of Rex and David but it was really great as is.

Stood Up (The Family Jules Book, #3) by Sean Ashcroft Review

Stood Up (The Family Jules Book 3) by Sean Ashcroft 3 Stars

Riley Jules has been in love with Brent Morrison since they were fifteen years old. He always thought the day of Brent’s wedding would be bittersweet, but he couldn’t have predicted that Brent’s fiancée would leave him standing at the altar.

With his best friend hurting, all Riley can think of is how desperately he wants to comfort Brent–but then one thing leads to another, and before he knows it, they’re falling into bed together. It seems like a one-time thing, but…

Maybe Riley’s feelings aren’t so one-sided after all.

Brent’s had a lot go wrong in his life–his parents dying, being left to raise his little sister alone, and now being humiliated in front of all of Hope Springs–but maybe the one good thing he could have is Riley.

That is, if he could just get Riley to stay in one place for more than five minutes.

Can Riley and Brent grab hold of their moment and keep each other close?

Review

I was very much looking forward to this last book in the Family Jules. As much as I like Riley and Brent, the book drags.

They need to talk more and the side plot of why Brent was jilted. I like the Brent is kind but the romance unspools slowly. A bit more talking would improve the love story.
